FREE INTERACTIVE FROG DISSECTION SOFTWARE

The software framework is lightweight and can be downloaded as an applet in a browser. Most of the system components, including all the virtual labs, are implemented as Java Beans. The architecture of the system is modular and can be easily extended to implement different laboratories and it supports augmentation by animation effects and realistic rendering of virtual objects. To increase student's engagement and interest, they are allowed to make errors and take wrong directions, and then backtrack to correctly perform the exercise. The laboratories allow students to perform exercises as in an actual lab and to gather data for preparing lab reports. The virtual laboratories enhance learning experiences by providing the student with a supplement to the physical lab. Evaluation data indicates an overall positive reaction by students and teachers to "The Virtual Laboratory". Subject areas addressed were Immunology and Gene Technology. Feedback is offered to address issues of problem-solving, knowledge and concepts. A variety of techniques and media have been embedded in the environment, including digital images, animation, video, basic/advanced reading text and links to external web sites. Interactivity and feedback to students operated at several levels to engage learners and enable students to gain control of their learning. In this way students were guided through the process of evidence-based enquiry. Students were given a scenario-based task and required to conduct a processes of enquiry by developing hypotheses, researching background, undertaking investigations and experimental work, then reflecting upon and refining their original hypotheses. This was developed in a framework of cognitive interactivity. As part of a 2002 State of Victoria (Department of Education & Training) Science in Schools partnership we collaborated with teachers to design an online environment based on constructivist theories of learning. We have created an online learning environment "The Virtual Laboratory" for the integration into the curriculum of authentic experiences for learners of biology at year twelve level. Evaluation data indicates an overall positive reaction by students and teachers towards " Virtual Lab: Interactive Frog Dissection " software. Feedback of students has been taken and result has been evaluated.
